• Let Your Ideas Fly

It is the year 2250 and we have built robots that have their own personal feelings, strengths, and weaknesses. However, unlike humans, these traits become more powerful as the robots age. These human-like creatures only die when their battery/heart dies. As a result, the robots which have been built a long time ago have started creating havoc all over the world.

A 12-year-old robot named Etherna is searching for peace for all robots and humans. Both of her parents got killed in a battle when she was five and an elderly woman has adopted her and has been taking care of her since then. However, all she provides her is food and hasn’t really talked to her much. Therefore, Etherna is shy, lonely, and immature. Also, she panics and screams under bizarre circumstances and does not react well under pressure. Her greatest fear is public speaking, in which her hands quiver even when she tries to make a minute-long speech to her class of only ten students. Her favorite time to concentrate on her thoughts is when she is going to sleep. In order to achieve her goal, she needs someone to open up to. She needs someone who is willing to understand her personal feelings and help. She then needs to learn how to take leadership and get people on her side, which is an extremely difficult challenge because of her fear of public speaking. If she does not overcome this fear, she will never achieve her dreams and others will eventually die because of too much fighting.

Story spine (Built using the formula I learned in the Pixar in a Box course on Khan Academy):

    1. Once upon a time, there was a robot named Etherna who was searching for peace for all robots and humans alike.
    2. Every day, she spent most of her time in her room alone finding a way to obtain peace.
    3. One day, she met another robot named Frollo who asked her to accompany him in putting on a big acrobatic show in the city far away. This had been his dream since he was five years old. However, he had trouble walking long distances and needed somebody to help him do some tricks. He also had a bad cold for over two months and feared that it could soon get worse, so they had to go to the city quickly.
    4. Because of that, Frollo got worse along the way and couldn’t make it to the city.
    5. Because of that, Etherna was forced to do the show on her own.
    6. Because of that, the show was a mess and people hated her. Frollo got angry at her and she still needed a way to achieve her own dream. Also, she needed to fix her reputation and make Frollo happy.
    7. Finally, she realized that it was time to let go of her inner fears and to share her inner thoughts/desires to the rest of the world. So, she went back to her mother who adopted her and told her about her dream and everything that happened while she was away. They both came up with a plan together to make both Frollo’s and her dreams come true. First, they went to Frollo and stayed with him until he got better. Then, they helped him do the show again. But this time, they demonstrated through the acrobatic tricks how the world will get much better if the war stopped. The show was a big hit and everyone got the message that they needed to stop the war. Finally, they worked together and were able to stop it.
    8. Ever since then, Frollo and Etherna lived together in peace and harmony sharing their thoughts with each other.

The moral of the story is that in order to achieve your dreams, you need to share it with a trustworthy person and then start taking small steps to achieve it even if you don’t have the whole plan ready.

  • Google Maps automatic speed detection

Today I went for a five-mile bike ride with my family along the Charles River to Harvard Square. Midway, my father checked google maps to see how much more time it would take to reach. It said that it would take 16 more minutes to reach by biking. Since my biking speed is in between the average walking speed and the average biking speed, it took me about double the time to reach Harvard Square than the GPS said. I came up with an idea on the way that the GPS should have a way that it detects the speed automatically even while biking or walking. Then it should calculate the time based on the speed it detected. This will be helpful for everyone because we all walk and bike at slightly different speeds.
